by Torsten Pape Synthematika

Synthematika 3 is the third instalment of a compilation series focused on highlighting lesser known names in the synth/industrial scene. It includes 37 tracks, almost 180 minutes of synthpop, futurepop, aggrotech and industrial music bringing together artists from Russia, United Kingdom, United States, Ukraine, Germany and other countries. The compilation contains a lot of previously unreleased tracks as well as special versions and exclusive material.

The compilation starts so nicely with the Russian/Moldovan band Unity One and “Infrared (SNTK3 Version)”. However, I think this track could be much better if it was polished a little more. In all, a wonderful ‘futurepop’ dance tune. We continue with the UK’s Antiscion, and “Overthrown”, interesting futurepop with somewhat abstract synths, this one grew on me. If I have any criticism, once again I think it could be improved on. Dreams Divide also from the UK follow with “Puppet Love”, a quality track well produced, catchy melody, highly danceable beat and great vocals from both band members. Once you hear this one, you don’t forget it.

The Moldovan Alexander Gladky then entertains us once again, this time as Alpha Point, with “High like the Angels (People Theatre’s Total Recall Remix)”. An immense remix of the futurepop/synthpop track by People Theatre, it’s what Peter does with so much class, great for the clubs. Spilstar a one man project from Denmark bring us a classic sounding synthpop tune, real 1980′s material, very nice vocals and well produced.

A real change was the Russian, Requiem4FM with “A Night in a Coma”, an electro track with a more rock sound than any previous, a nice melody with some good clear vocals. This kind of leads us in to the wonderful “loving wrath” from the Canadian for all the emptiness. It drives, it beats and pulses and the vocals are outstanding, as are the thought provoking lyrics. Despite the subject matter it is completely danceable too and possesses a very uplifting sound. It won’t be easy to follow that.

However the German electropop duo, Vainerz with “I Try To Be (Synthematrix Mix)”, do quite a good job of it, but it sounds uneven with changing levels in places and once again I think needs to be finished properly. Israel’s Observe & Control deliver “Rain” so well. A danceable dark-electro/industrial track, and very much one to sing-a-long too. Very different and quickly turning into my favorite track of the album so far, quite an achievement in my view, considering “Puppet Love” and “loving wrath” have gone before.

The Polish band Black Canvas deliver the very nice “Pyromaniac”. Melancholic sounding while the synth sounds still give it and retain its beauty. It has gloomy sounds and wonderful cold vocals which fill a room. The track is now very much a favorite of mine. I am finding some great surprises on this album, and that is what I love best.

Per Aspera from Russia “Find Yourself”, features Mental Discipline, and brings us back into the land of futurepop/synthpop with for me the expected good vocals. Dust Heaven from the Ukraine, continue with a similar sound “Doublefaced”, but with adorable female vocals. Good electronic music and still retains a dance beat. I fell in love with this one.

The album then brings us another change in the form of German band P24 with “Lichtjahre Entfernt (Mr. Bouvain Remix)”. The Mr Bouvain I presume being that of Vainerz. A great danceable heavy beat electropop track and remix. Technomancer from Norway follow with “Artificial (SNTK3 Edit)”, with an excellent techno-synthpop sound. The influences of Technomancer’s fellow countrymen Apoptygma Berzerk are very apparent here.

Things get quieter and slow down a little, as E-gens from Russia bring to the compilation exactly what they aspire too, in the melodic “Holy Dreams”. In my opinion it’s beautiful and mysterious synthpop. I then find another favorite immediately from the first beats from the Ukraine’s Ginger Snap5 and “Shadow gHost”. This is great electronic dance-floor music.

Cold In May from Belarus, with “Kill Yourself with Pain (Mental Discipline Remix)”, left me almost speechless. It’s melody is beautiful, as is it’s darkness. The penetrating vocals are also at a perfect level. Pattaya Memorial House, “Bullet for a Ghost” follows, a techno instrumental track with several changes. It would be ok in the right place but I am not sure this compilation is it.

“Till I Get You” by Mind:|:Shredder of the Ukraine, deliver our first taste of aggrotech. Another track to take note of, with a great dance beat. The UK’s Cyferdyne follow with “Nova (SNTK3 Edit)”, a noted track once again from what I think are one of the UK’s best industrial bands. Sleetgrout from Russia continue in a similar vein with a good dark-electro track with “Dance like Joke”. Maybe my dancing is a joke but this track isn’t, and it is once again a great dance track like so many that have gone before.

Fabious Corpus Act of Belarus and “Morality (SNTK3 Edit)” bring us a highly rhythmic electro-industrial track. The UK also adds to the compilation Cease2Xist with another electro-industrial track “My Burning Rage”, we get back on the dance-floor with this hard hitting sound and I rate it highly. The Polish band H.Exe, add the very harsh-electro sound of “Infinity featuring Digital Angel.” Sounds very Grendel and Psyclon Nine inspired but that is fine by me.

Russia’s Zweifelhaft, “The 5th of November”, is a very definite TBM/Industrial track, continuing our procession of mostly dance-floor fillers. Lthrboots from the USA adds “My Salvation”, an excellent industrial track, and check out the YouTube video for this one also, with acclaimed video producer Jeff Adair (Ludus Studios). “My Salvation” is in one word – Quality.

Universally Unnecessary are also from the USA, bringing to the compilation their quite unique brand of industrial-rap, this is one of their best, Ryan M delivering some good vocals in different styles, and Cory L some great beats. But once again there are some finishing touches missing. This is something very noticeable on this compilation.

We continue with more industrial sounds and harsh vocals by the Ukrainian, “Thorn Drive’s “Keepers of the Dawn”. This really for me didn’t do anything for me, vocals are not bad, but the nasty synth sounds drowned them out far too much. Next, the electro-industrial band Outside from the UK with “Function”, again I am feeling disappointed. Too rough for me and missing the cyber sounds of some of their other work. Another electro-industrial band Liquid Red from Russia add, “A Step Closer (IN[TOXIN] Mix)”. Again not for me, it’s choppy and rough. I am now pleased to hear the dark-electro sounds of Hyperhate, from the Ukraine with ‘Hate you!? This could do yet again use some polish but very promising.

With the German Mind.Area and “Insane (SNTK3 Edit)”, we seem to have suddenly moved into the area of experimental-industrial. Some complex sounds and feels too much like a trip into another world I really don’t want to make.

Nexus VI from Russia follow with a superb dark-electro track “Indicator (Remix by [Sin.thetic Squad])”. Great synth sounds, nice vocals at a good level, and I am pleased to be right back on the dance-floor with this one, as it’s what it’s meant for. After some initial strange sounds I cannot see the point of, the Russian Systemshock continues with another great dance beat track “Shiftdelete (Error550 Mix by |De:Source|)”, given by some nice trance type elements within the music. I also like the vocals which I find clear and far from the norm adding to my enthusiasm.

We now go back to the USA with the solo musician Joshua Hart and “Forever (Remix by Ginger Snap5)”. The dance beat continues with this remix by the very impressive Ginger Snap5, which adds to Joshua’s work without hiding anything of the original track.

We then return to a more melodic sound of A.S.A.P by the Russian “Hired.Life”, this is a beautiful composition but the vocal levels could I feel be improved in places. A lovely rhythmic Electro/EBM sound with synthpop elements. The album is completed by Na-Hag from the Ukraine and their track “Khepri”, tribal-industrial sounds prevail from the start, another track which I feel doesn’t belong here. However, it is very atmospheric and one of the most well produced on the album.

Conclusion:
The compilation is available both as a free download (low quality) and a paid download (high quality) and we should take this into consideration. It’s a little rough around the edges in places maybe, but hats off to Synthematik for bringing all this talent to us once again. Several of the tracks are good when they could be great. A great mix of sounds including a lot of Futurepop, it has been around for a while now but is far from dead or even dying with this kind of talent around. In general If you like dance orientated music you will love this compilation, and based on all these points I thoroughly recommend it.

by Danya Malashenkov

by Synaps_8

Syntension

This is Volume Alpha of a new series of compilations from Synthematik, under the name Sytension which focus on the instrumental side of the dark electronic music. Volume Alpha offers 13 instrumental tracks ranging from electro-industrial and aggrotech to futurepop and trance.

The first offering is “20-07-69 by Alien 2064 (Arrival Version by Alpha Point)”. We are off to a great start, Alpha Point from Moldova deliver a classic industrial/trance type melodic anthem. Not sure about the “Arrival version” as it feels more like we are starting a journey. This is a smooth, well produced trance classic and must surely be in the hands of many DJ’s already.

Personal Space also from Russia, offer an instrumental version of “Blackout”. More upbeat synth music, classic “spacesynth” material for DJ’s and the dance-floor. Whitar from Belarus continue our sci-fi journey with “Keep Breathing”. Again a catchy beat/dance-focused winner.

Fabious Corpus Act of Belarus with their, “Corruption” track bring a change with a more electro-industrial sound. I like the track and it still contains some of sci-fi/trance element, but it still seems somewhat out of place after what has gone before. Thus, halting our journey a little. [CYBER: FLESH] from Russia brings us the Synthematik Dub Voice version of its “Voice of the Universe.” This also has more of the electro-industrial sound but more pounding and more trance like. This continues our formerly seamless dancing journey through space.

“Panikdanceshockforever” from the Belarusian band Diversant:13, further continues our trance like state but this time with a more dark-electro feel. An Alien Vampires sounding dance-floor filler, and the best so far for me. Next we have Perfect Symmetry also from Belarus with their track “The Anthem”. This I describe as TBM meets drum and bass, the combination is interesting and works well.

Next we go ‘techno/electro-industrial’ with “Lock And Load” from the Russian Energoblock, also featuring an aggressive aggrotech beat. The track “Absolute” from the Russian musician DJ GOLUB, contains trance, futurepop and industrial elements, and this time some samples. Another superb dance track, with a noticeable Jean Michael Jarre influence amongst many more I think.

“Every Planet We Reach Is Dead”, from the Ukrainian electro band Dirty Bird 13, is a dark-electro dance track. An all round excellent powerful instrumental track. “Kill Emotions” by the one man Russian project Mental Discipline, delivers a superb futurepop/synthpop, dance track but with much more.

Damien Poll from Russia brings us the dark-electro/futurepop sound of “New Invasion”, with a good heavy dance beat, making it different from what has gone previously. The final track is “Nothing” by the Russian band Systemshock, a trance track with some dubstep bass. Very different to anything previous and a suitable way to bring us back to earth.

Conclusion:
I liked this album from the beginning but it just seemed to get better and better, culminating for me in the Dirty Bird 13 and Mental Discipline tracks. Ideal alternative music for the club scene and still just hard enough to digest for people from the outside world. But it also has all those elements necessary to keep a good party going. style="text-align: justify;">A mixed bag of goodies straight out of the Synthematik lable. On this album you fins most of your needs fullfilled when it comes to futurepop, EBM, Dark electro or industrial. As with all mixed compilations like this there is a curse and a blessing in the diversity of music. You will most likely find songs on this album that would make you dance even during the sadest funeral, but you will also find songs that will make you want to rip your ears of in frustration.

Synthematika Three has its focus on the more upbeat music. There are no songs that are really slow or anticlimactic compared to the rest of the album. For all the DJs out there I will dare say that this album will stand the trials of any dancefloor.

To conclude this review I think you should check this album out. No matter what genres of the electronic music that floats your boat you will probably find something on this album that makes you go “Hey! This is kinda cool!”.

The rating on this album has been mostly based on the diversity of the music and the fact that I realy love the general flow of this album. No anticlimax, no dead ends. The songs change but the general feeling and flow continues.

Enjoy

by Magnus “Mange” Pettersson

Spilstar Dignity

‘Dignity’ is the debut release from Danish Spilstar and the title track was also my first encounter with the artist in the Synthematika Vol 3 compilation. Spilstar got this nice 90′s synthpop feeling combined with elements from the end of the 80′s. Exactly the taste and smell synhtpop should have in my opinion. Even though I don’t cry of joy the way I did the first time I heard Zynic last year, Spilstar have true potential of greatness.

However, there’s something odd going on with this EP, and it’s not that it isn’t good, because it is. What is wrong is that they are barking up the wrong tree. The hit of this EP is not the title track, but the B-side “The Holy Truth”. “Dignity” is a good track, even great, slow and mellowed synthpop with a strong chorus. However, it is simply overshined by the amazing second track. Even though the verse is not as strong, the chorus is simply perfect.

While “Dignity” is a track that makes you do the goth nod (registered trademark to Nick Quarm), “The Holy Truth” give you the double rainbow experience. It’s a track you fall in love to and a track you fall in love with.

Is this a critical mistake, well, no, and maybe some yes. With this EP, Spilstar shows that he is ready to take on the scene, and he will sooner or later, I promise you that. However, I think that the B-side would have made a much bigger impact on people and if someone only get to hear one track it’s “The Holy Truth” they should hear, not “Dignity”.

Before we round up this review, there’s an almost hidden little gem after the three remixes of the title track, called “Zombies”, and you only get if you get the paid version. Even though it’s not quite as great as the two first tracks, it’s still a good track and Spilstar show he has talent for making catchy choruses, and that is a live or die situation in the synthpop genre.

Synthematik have picked up so many talented artists and released their first album or EP, only to lose them to a bigger company. I think it will be hard for them to keep their hands on Spilstar as well.

by Patrik Lindström

by Synaps_8

‘Dellamorte Dellamore’ is the first release from Mirrors of Mind under the wings of Russian Synthematik Records after their successful demo ‘Po Tonkoy Grani’ in 2010. On Synthematik’s homepage, they said to be similar with Blutengel, but I think that is such an evil thing to say and nothing I would lay upon even my worst enemies. Instead, I would simply say that it is electronic goth and while Blutengel is Justin Beiber for the goth genre, Mirrors of Mind is far more artsy in the whole atmosphere of its construction.

It’s worth mentioning that all the tracks are sung in Russian, so all the English titles are simply translations of the Russian original titles. So, here we go!

To be honest, the title track is probably the least inspired tracks among the 3 original tracks on this EP. It simply feels too plain and even though the piano melodies are beautiful, I can’t really say that anything is happening. I get a whole lot more out of the second track “Desolate Theatre” that have so much more depth and atmosphere to it, removing the disco beat and focusing entirely on how your emotions respond to this piece. Even the more up-tempo “Strange Dreams” have more flow to it than the title track. I recommend these two tracks.

What is really interesting is the Russian translated Diorama cover of “Exit The Grey”. It has been given an unique feeling of Mirrors of Mind, but still you recognize yourself of the original from Diorama, even though I don’t know a single word of Russian.

There’s two remixes on this EP as well, two of “Dellamorte Dellamore” that I do not care much for (part from the beautiful piano in the middle of the Mental Discipline Remix).

For you who pay for this release, there’s a “Special Dream Version” of “Under The Veil of Eyelids” which is similar in style of “Desolate Theatre”, beautiful track that could make it worth paying for instead of getting the free version.

by Сяргей Будкін

by Michi

Let’s face it, futurepop is an awfully ironic tag for two reasons: After fifteen years the majority of futurepop bands now sound quite retro, and now that we are living in the future we can look at the pop scene and find it as dull and artistically void as the machine-generated pornography of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. But with labels like Synthematika still cultivating some great talent in the ebm and future pop scenes it isn’t hard to understand while the tag still has a lot of appeal.

With a line-up of thirty-seven bands on the latest compilation from the label it is evident that the pop and dance orientated ends of the electronic music section are still in good health with a wealth of lesser known artists from across the world still creating catch electro music.

Stand-out tracks in the massive 180 minute running time include ‘Puppet Love’ by Dreams Divide, ‘Rain’ by Observe & Control, ‘Till I Get You’ by Mind:|:Shredder, and ‘Insane’ by Mind.Area. Yet the majority of tracks featured here would easily find themselves a welcome addition to any club play list with their emphasis on dance beats and catchy melodies.
Though there doesn’t seem to be any coherent construction to the running order of the songs there’s very little in the way of jarring transitions between songs, which makes this an overall easy listen as well.

The production of the tracks does vary somewhat with the more established bands obviously having a more polished sound, but the final mastering seems to have filed-off the rougher edges to at least give the rougher songs a little clean up.

As far as compilations got ‘Synthematika 3′ gives you plenty to get your teeth into. While it is biased towards dance-orientated tracks it does present a great cross-section of underground talent from around the world, which alone is worth the modest download price.

by Sean Palfrey

<a
